Press Release: Deadly Missile Attacks on Hospitals and School in Aleppo and Idlib

On February 15, four hospitals and a school in provinces of Aleppo and Idlib were struck by airstrikes and missile attacks, leaving civilian casualties, including women and children. Two of the four hospitals attacked were supported by SAMS, another one was supported by Doctors Without Borders (MSF), and the fourth hospital attacked was an OBGYN/neonatal clinic.

Aleppo Hospital Hit by Barrel Bomb, Underground Infrastructure Saves Lives

A barrel bomb dropped from a government helicopter hit a SAMS-supported facility in Aleppo today at 1:20pm. The barrel bomb went through the roof of the operating room in the basement of the facility, damaging the hospital's infrastructure and destroying essential medical equipment. The facility has been temporarily closed.

A humanitarian report to be released Thursday addresses the dire medical situation in Syria and reports how doctors from all over the world—including here in Chicago—are being arrested and tortured simply for trying to save lives. “This is my fifth visit into Aleppo which is considered one of the most dangerous cities in the world, especially for healthcare workers,” said Chicago-area critical care specialist Dr. Zaher Sahloul.

Medical Aid Unable to Enter Syrian Rebel-Held Aleppo: World Health Organization

The World Health Organization has been unable to get a desperately needed medical aid convoy through to civilians in the rebel-held part of Aleppo despite a government promise last month to give it access. The non-governmental Union of Syrian Medical Relief Organisations, made up of Syrian doctors, says cholera, typhoid, scabies and tuberculosis are spreading among the 360,000 people in rebel-held Aleppo for lack of treatments or vaccines. The area is cut off on three sides by the Syrian army. All sides in Syria's three-year civil war have prevented medical supplies crossing front lines, fearing they could be used to help wounded enemy fighters.

Syria: New Barrel Bombs Hit Aleppo - Attacks Defy UN, Hit Medical Facilities

The Syrian government is indiscriminately striking civilians and civilian objects in Aleppo with unguided, high-explosive barrel bombs. The attacks continue despite a United Nations Security Council Resolution unanimously passed on February 22, 2014, demanding that all parties in Syria cease the indiscriminate use of barrel bombs and other weapons in populated areas. The UN will meet to discuss its second round of reporting on compliance with the resolution on April 30.

BEIRUT: An unprecedented aerial bombardment of Aleppo by the Syrian government has sent thousands of people fleeing in recent weeks and exacerbated an already dire humanitarian situation in the city. Some of the most intense bombing came during the Geneva II peace talks between the Assad regime and the opposition-in-exile which began in late January, with 800 people dying in the first week of the discussions alone.
