Safeguarding Health in Conflict Coalition welcomes a new resolution by the UN Security Council condemning attacks on health workers and facilities. The value of the resolution will be determined by whether states adhere to international norms, develop strategies to prevent attacks, and bring perpetrators of attacks to justice.

The statement was made in response to WHO's Global Vaccine Action Plan.

Documentation Vital to Ending Attacks on Health Care Workers

2014 was a distressing year for health care workers in conflict areas around the world, as attacks on medical professionals and facilities were carried out in numerous countries. As these attacks continue, they must be appropriately documented in order to increase available information, raise awareness, and find appropriate solutions that facilitate accountability and ultimately prevent future violence.

At the 67th World Health Assembly in Geneva last week, Chantal Baumgarten of Save the Children delivered a statement on behalf of her organization as well 21 other organizations who are affiliated with the Safeguarding Health in Conflict Coalition. The statement was made in respond to agenda item 17M: “WHO’s response, and role as the health cluster lead, in meeting the growing demands of health in humanitarian emergencies (resolution WHA 65.20).”
